Restrictions affect Ethio-U.S. tie, regional stability

  • Ethiopia believes U.S. to review decision

ADDIS ABABA-The U.S. decision to impose visa restrictions on Ethiopian government officials and its wide-ranging restrictions on economic and security assistance on the latter affects the Horn of Africa’s stability, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). During his press briefing yesterday, MoFA Spokesperson Ambassador Dina Mufti said that the decision to impose restriction would have an impact on the two country’s alliance to counter terrorism in the volatile Horn of Africa. In this regard the collaboration of Ethiopia and U.S. has borne fruit by bringing peace and stability in the turbulent region.

“Ethiopia never compromises with its sovereignty. The tendency by the U.S. administration to treat the Ethiopian Government on an equal footing with the TPLF, a terrorist group is regrettable,” he said. The spokesperson further stated that the decision by the U.S. government to impose visa restrictions and other measures is not only regrettable but will also seriously harm and undermine the constructive spirit of engagement and the significant gains achieved on the ground.

“The Ethiopian government believes that the U.S. will review its decision once again and reject the decision understanding the reality on the ground in the country,” he stated. Ethiopia and the U.S. started diplomatic and political relation in 1903.
