
ADDIS ABABA – Ministry of Women Children and Youth, Ethiopian Police University, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) signed Trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to provide anti-Gender Based Violence (GBV) special unit training.
During the signing ceremony, Minster Filsan Abdullahi said that the actors of the training are police taskforce who are forerunners against GBV can run activities in a scientific way. Those special unit trainees are responsible for protecting human beings; especially women and children before and after incidents happen everywhere.
According to the Minister, Tigray State would be prioritized for the Minster to deploy the taskforce as the area is seriously affected by conflicts. In this regard, the UNFPA pumped a budget 5 million Birr training project for deploying 1,400 trainees to Tigray State within a month. Those trainees were selected from the state so as to facilitate the activities and enable the community to easily communicate conditions.
Likewise, deploying the special police taskforce would continue in other parts of the country like Amhara and Benshangul Gumuz States within the shortest time possible. To this end , the number of deployed ones and the amount of budget is being considered taking the population of states into consideration with a special emphasis to conflict affected areas, the Minister added.
Country Representative at UNFPA, Dennia Gayle on her part appreciated Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed’s (Ph.D.) commitment for zero tolerant on GBV and said activities have to be institutionalized to effectively contain the GBV via creating conducive environment for police institution to make them role models for other countries in this regard.
Federal Police Commission Deputy Commissioner General Mesefin Abebe on the occasion said that to end the violence, stakeholders should stand together and cooperatively fight the incident. Particularly, the stakeholders have to give priority for places susceptible to conflict.
