Over 28 million voters so far registered : NEBE

ADDIS ABABA- The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has disclosed that voter’s registration has shown steady progress over the past weeks and currently over 28.73 million voters registered for the 6th General Elections whilst the registration is underway in 41,798 election offices.

Considering the prevalence of consecutive holydays during the month of April have left a significant number of potential voters without cards, the council decided to postpone voter’s registration by seven days till 14 May 2021.

Accordingly, the board has called electorate to take their cards from nearby election offices to choose their representatives. Meanwhile, the NEBE said that it launched the printing of voting cards and closed candidates on 6 May 2021 per the country’s Electoral, Political Party’s Registration and Election’s Code of Conduct.

As to the code of conduct, a political party may change or replace a candidate only within a week of the withdrawal of a particular candidate; or when the candidate withdraws after the end of candidate registration period, the replacement can be done only during the month prior to Election Day. Stating that it has accepted a significant number of candidate replacement applications related from different political parties, the board stressed that now the practice has come to the end.
