ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia and Israel are intensively working to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly to boost the agriculture sector, Israel Ambassador to Ethiopia, Raphael Morav announced.
Indicating that Ethiopia and Israel have been working to produce and export high quality avocado for the last 13 years, the Ambassador said that the cooperation was a success as Ethiopia is producing more than half a million high quality seedlings of avocado per year.
As many farmers grow avocado, this lends a big hand in turning many subsistence farmers into commercial farmers. Also, the farmers will help promote the horticulture sector of Ethiopia, in particular, and agriculture as a whole, the Ambassador told Ethiopian News Agency.
Moreover, Ambassador Raphael said that the country plans to become involved in a new program of growing wheat in lowland areas. The initiative was taken by the Government of Ethiopia to help grow wheat in the lowlands of Ethiopia for substituting imports of the country, he added.
The Ambassador also stated that the program will bring change in agricultural development in Ethiopia since Israel is well known for its semi-arid agriculture with advanced irrigation schemes.
