In times of conflict and societal unrest, the wisdom and guidance of elders and religious leaders play a crucial role in restoring peace. These figures often serve as custodians of cultural values and moral principles, drawing upon their deep-rooted experiences to mediate disputes, foster understanding, cement societal values; and sustain peace and stability.
Their influence can transcend generational divides, bridging gaps between differing communities and ideologies.
By promoting dialogue, compassion, and reconciliation, elders and religious leaders not only help bridge differences but also lay the groundwork for sustainable peace. These leaders play multifaceted roles in conflict resolution and cultivating societal cohesion, which are essential ingredients for building a harmonious society.
Through their teachings, guidance and spiritual influence, elders and religious leaders help defuse tensions and prevent violence. Their presence provides moral clarity and inspires collective efforts toward unity, making them indispensable figures in the pursuit of lasting peace.
Recently, a delegation from the Inter- Religious Council of Ethiopia paid a visit to Tigray State, with the aim of promoting national reconciliation and interfaith dialogue. In relation to their visit, they asserted that war is both unacceptable and unnecessary, emphasizing the importance of fostering a dialogue-centered culture to resolve differences peacefully and steer the country away from conflict.
According to the delegation, differences should be addressed and resolved amicably. Thus, they urged for peace, a stance worthy of praise.
Under the auspices of the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia Assembly, religious leaders spoke to ENA with regard to their recent call for peace made in Mekelle, in Tigray State.
Speaking on behalf of the religious leaders, President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Sheikh Haji Ibrahim Tufa, said that during the visit, the delegation held discussions with the Chief Administrator of the Tigray Interim Administration, Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede, along with his leadership team, and various regional stakeholders.
According to him, the religious leaders held discussions on various issues with stakeholders in Tigray State; and they emphasized that all differences must be resolved through peaceful means.
Expressing his hope that stakeholders would make every effort to settle all their differences in a peaceful manner through dialogue and constructive engagement, he stated that religious leaders had urged all stakeholders to embrace the path of peace.
Moreover, underscoring the importance of cultivating the culture of dialogue-driven conflict resolution throughout the country, Haji Ibrahim vowed that the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia Assembly will persist in strengthening its constructive role on the matter.
For his part, Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church General Manager, His Grace Abune Sawiros, reflected the same sentiment, emphasizing that all differences must be resolved exclusively through peaceful means in a way promoting peaceful dialogue, mutual understanding, and roundtable discussions.
In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, Head of the Debre Birhan Tebasse Mulu Wongel Church, Pastor Niguse Mamo, said that everyone has a role to play in fostering peace, particularly religious leaders who bear a unique responsibility. Just as Jesus Christ reconciled humanity with God, religious leaders must preach and work determinedly to reconcile people with one another.
Pastor Negussie emphasized that peace is the foundation of unity, peace, and development. Thus, he stressed that giving priority to peace is a non-negotiable matter. He also expressed appreciation for the measures taken to end the war in Tigray State through peaceful dialogue, describing it as a gesture of a new culture of resolving conflicts through dialogue. He said that such efforts promote forgiveness and tolerance.
He concluded with a heartfelt message to the younger generation, encouraging a steadfast commitment to peace. Quoting the Holy Scriptures, he reminded them: “If possible, live in peace with all people.” He urged all Ethiopians to contribute to building a nation that respects and uplifts every one of its citizens.
It is true that conflicts will not do well for any party, but lead to destruction. Therefore, giving priority to peaceful dialogue is of critical significance for promoting lasting peace and ensuring prosperity.
In his most recent address to the Members of the Parliament, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) also underscored the importance of maintaining peace throughout the country and reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to peace, stability and prosperity, including in the Tigray State.
What the people of Tigray need is peace and dialogue-not war, he said, stressing the government’s clear position. “We seek no conflict and aim to resolve issues without firing a single shot.
According to the Premier, the Pretoria Agreement has “brought transformative impact to Tigray,” putting an end to the tragic daily loss of life and offering a hopeful outlook on the country’s ongoing journey toward peace, unity and sustainable development.
Urging all Ethiopians, including the people of Tigray, to contribute to national dialogue and lasting peace, the Prime Minister emphasized the important role of religious leaders and elders in preventing escalation and fostering dialogue.
True, religious leaders should consistently engage in such endeavors to foster peace; they must serve as pillars of harmony within society. Research indicates that approximately 75 percent of the global population is influenced by religion, with a profound connection to spiritual beliefs.
In Ethiopia, data reveals that 99 percent of the population identifies as believers and hold their faith in high regard, revering their Creator and demonstrating zeal and obedience to their beliefs, a sentiment echoed worldwide.
This deeply religious and God-fearing populace is, in various ways, guided by religious teachings in their daily lives. They heed the words and actions of religious institutions and their leaders, contributing significantly to social unity and peace-building efforts.
Owing to this, the importance of religious leaders in fostering a culture of dialogue and conflict resolution cannot be overstated. Their role in promoting peace through spiritual guidance and paternal counsel is substantial, as they ensure accountability for wrongdoers while advocating for forgiveness for victims. In essence, religious leaders should discharge their responsibilities accordingly in terms of promoting peace, nurturing the culture of peaceful dialogue and fostering mutual understanding within their communities.
