ADDIS ABABA – The Great Ethiopian Run celebrated its 25th anniversary this week with a high-profile event, marking a major milestone in the country’s sporting and cultural calendar.
The celebration coincided with the annual 10 km Great Ethiopian Run International Race, drawing athletes, dignitaries, and international guests in honor of its founder, the legendary athlete Haile Gebrselassie.
In her opening remarks, Women and Social Affairs Minister Ergoge Tesfaye (PhD) underscored the significance of the event. “This celebration reflects the enduring strength and vision of Haile Gebrselassie. His legacy inspires resilience and determination in every Ethiopian,” she said.
The Minister emphasized that the Great Run has become a powerful tool for national unity, promoting multiculturalism and social cohesion across the country.
Ergoge also noted that beyond athletic achievement, the Great Ethiopian Run has come to symbolize a shared Ethiopian identity. “We are celebrating not just a race, but a 25-year journey that represents our collective spirit and diversity,” she added.
Tourism State Minister Endegena Abebe highlighted the event’s role in boosting tourism and Ethiopia’s international image. “The Great Ethiopian Run is a vital platform for showcasing our cultural heritage to the world,” he said.
He also stressed the need to create more opportunities for similar events that blend sport, culture, and tourism to benefit both local communities and the national economy.
The silver jubilee event was attended by ambassadors, diplomats, and members of the international community who joined in recognizing Ethiopia’s athletic legacy and the enduring impact of the Great Ethiopian Run. The gathering celebrated the past while casting a hopeful eye toward the future, where sport continues to serve as a unifying force.
The upcoming edition of the race, scheduled for December, is expected to draw more than 55,000 participants from around the globe. The event will honor the achievements of iconic athletes such as Haile Gebrselassie and Birhane Adere, both of whom are expected to attend. It will also pay tribute to the vital role of sports diplomacy in strengthening Ethiopia’s global presence.
This year’s race is poised not only to spark nationwide enthusiasm but also to promote social responsibility. Organizers have pledged continued support for vulnerable and marginalized communities, making the run both a celebration and a platform for inclusive development.
