A Warm Message on the 82nd Anniversary of The Ethiopian Herald

Dear fellow journalists at The Ethiopian Herald,

What a joy it is to celebrate your incredible 82 years of storytelling, truth-telling, and shining a light on Ethiopia’s journey! As we mark this special milestone, I can’t help but feel a surge of pride in the deep, heartfelt connection between Burundi and Ethiopia, two nations that share not just a continent, but a spirit of unity, resilience, and hope for a brighter African future.

For 82 years, The Ethiopian Herald has been more than a newspaper, it’s been a friend, a voice, and a mirror for Ethiopia’s dreams and struggles. You’ve captured the heart of a nation, from its vibrant culture to its bold strides toward progress, while also amplifying Africa’s story to the world. Your pages have woven a tapestry of ideas, sparking conversations that unite people across borders. And today, as we honor your legacy, it feels only right to also celebrate the beautiful friendship between Burundi and Ethiopia.

Our two countries share something special, a bond built on trust, respect, and a shared love for our continent. It’s the kind of friendship where we learn from each other, lift each other up, and dream big together. Whether it’s through late-night diplomatic talks, trading tips on growing the best coffee, or cheering each other on at cultural festivals, Burundi and Ethiopia have always had each other’s backs. I smile thinking about the moments when our music and dances have blended, or when our leaders have sat down to tackle big challenges side by side.

Ethiopia, with its proud history as the home of the African Union, has been a guiding light for African unity, and Burundi has been right there, supporting that vision every step of the way. We’ve worked together on everything from agricultural systems to keeping the peace in Somalia and in all our continent. It’s not always easy, but our shared commitment to a better, stronger Africa keeps us going. I’m grateful for how Ethiopia’s innovations, like its green legacy and energy projects, inspire us in Burundi, and I hope our own vision and efforts at moving towards an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060 spark some pride in you too.

As you flip to the next chapter of The Ethiopian Herald’s story, know that Burundi is cheering you on. Your work reminds us that stories matter, that they connect us, challenge us, and push us to be better. Here’s to deepening the friendship between our nations, to more laughter, shared meals, and big ideas for the future. May The Ethiopian Herald keep shining for many more years, telling the stories that make Ethiopia, and all of Africa, proud.

With all my warmth and admiration,

Message from the Embassy of Sri Lanka on the Occasion of the 82nd Anniversary of The Ethiopian Herald

On the momentous occasion of the 82nd anniversary of the Ethiopian Herald—a leading national English-language newspaper in this vibrant nation of Ethiopia—the Embassy of Sri Lanka extends its warmest congratulations to the management, editorial team, and dedicated journalists who have contributed immensely to the enduring success and reputation of this distinguished publication.

For more than eight decades, the Herald has served as a vital platform for informed discourse, playing a pivotal role in shaping Ethiopia’s national narrative while powerfully amplifying African perspectives to the global community.

Successive Ambassadors of Sri Lanka to Ethiopia have had the honour of engaging with the Ethiopian Herald on numerous occasions. The Embassy greatly values the Herald’s steadfast commitment to highlighting Ethiopia’s evolving partnerships—both regional and global. Through thoughtful and effective journalism, the Herald has helped spotlight shared aspirations and expanding collaboration, particularly in areas of economic development, technology transfer, global governance, policy leadership, climate action, digital transformation, financial inclusion, peace and security, and innovation.

Sri Lanka and Ethiopia share a long-standing friendship and a dynamic, forward-looking partnership across a wide range of sectors including trade, tourism, investment, manufacturing, hospitality, and cultural exchange. Our cooperation extends to multilateral platforms as well, with shared commitments to addressing global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, resource management, and aviation collaboration.

The Ethiopian Herald has also played an admirable role in documenting recent milestones in Sri Lanka– Ethiopia relations—particularly the high-level engagements between the Presidents of both countries at the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala. These discussions laid a strong foundation for deepening cooperation in key areas including tourism, aviation, investment (notably in apparel manufacturing and the hospitality sector), Sri Lankan cuisine and cultural heritage, and institutional frameworks for investment protection and the avoidance of double taxation.

The anticipated launch of direct flights between Addis Ababa and Colombo by Ethiopian Airlines is a significant step toward strengthening connectivity between Africa and South Asia—enhancing people-to-people links, facilitating professional mobility, expanding cargo operations, and boosting trade and tourism. The Herald’s endorsement and coverage of such developments is sincerely appreciated.

Under the leadership of Sri Lanka’s new government, there is a renewed commitment to strengthening relations with Africa—particularly with Ethiopia, the African Union, and UNECA. Sri Lanka sees Africa not merely as a trading partner, but as a strategic ally in inclusive and sustainable development. Areas of mutual interest continue to grow: from garment manufacturing, agriculture, and eco- and Ayurvedic tourism, to telecommunications, financial services, cosmetics, handloom industries, the gem and jewellery sector, and joint ventures in plantation and agro-industrial development.

In this context, publications such as the Ethiopian Herald serve as critical enablers of public awareness, mutual understanding, and informed engagement between our nations and peoples.

Beyond bilateral cooperation, Sri Lanka stands firmly with Africa in its call for greater representation and equity in global governance—including the reform of the United Nations Security Council—and in reshaping the architecture of international financial institutions to ensure fair, inclusive, and sustainable development trajectories.

As Africa’s diplomatic capital, Addis Ababa plays a central role in these ongoing global conversations. Through its insightful, diverse, and Africa-centered reporting, the Ethiopian Herald provides an indispensable platform for reflection and advocacy on such pressing issues.

In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, traditional journalism faces growing challenges—ranging from financial and logistical constraints to security risks and pressures on editorial independence. Despite these hurdles, the Ethiopian Herald has consistently upheld the values of journalistic integrity, factual accuracy, and service to the public. It remains a trusted platform for diverse viewpoints, contributing meaningfully to dialogue and decision-making at national, regional, and international levels.

Charge d’Affairs a.i. of the Chinese Embassy

Sun Mingxi

Congratulations for the 82nd Anniversary of the Ethiopian Herald. Since its establishment, Ethiopian Herald has been playing a pivotal role in Ethiopia, recording the country’s development and progress faithfully, thus becoming an important window for the Ethiopian people to understand the world and for the international community to know Ethiopia. Over the past years, Ethiopian Herald has maintained close cooperation with the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, and has made remarkable achievements in promoting cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between the two countries and the two peoples.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Ethiopia. Guided by the consensus reached by our top leaders, political mutual trust has been continuously enhanced and practical cooperation has been deepened in various fields.

A number of landmark projects such as railways and roads have been built within the framework of Belt and Road cooperation. Confucius Institutes and Luban Workshop continue to serve as bridges to make heart-to-heart connection. Batches of medical teams provided consistent services to local people.

Within the framework of FOCAC, we are making joint efforts to further implement the ten partnership actions, strengthen cooperation in key areas such as green industries, e-commerce and payment, science and technology, and artificial intelligence, and deepen cooperation in traditional fields. The zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines enables China to have access to coffee, avocado and sesame from Ethiopia more easily.

Beyond, our collaboration thrives within United Nations and BRICS. We stand together firmly in advocating for multilateralism and opposing unilateralism and protectionism. As all-weather strategic partners, China and Ethiopia have conducted cooperation in all dimensions, setting an example for Global South partnership and building all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era. As the witness to this journey, the Ethiopian Herald has been serving as a vital medium to tell the stories of our cooperation to Ethiopia, Africa and the world.

As we celebrate this milestone and look into the future, we look forward to the continuous deepening of cooperation with the Ethiopian Herald , and sincerely believe that the Herald will keep playing its unique role, acting as a vibrant gateway for the Ethiopian people to discover China.

May the Ethiopian Herald continue to thrive as a trusted storyteller, ensuring that the warmth of people-to-people bonds reaches every corner of Ethiopia.
