
ADDIS ABABA — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Alberto Varnero, a pioneering architect and engineer whose contributions have left an indelible mark on Ethiopia’s construction and architectural landscape since the late 1950s.
Taking to his official X account on yesterday, the Prime Minister extended heartfelt condolences, praising Varnero’s decades-long dedication to Ethiopia’s infrastructural development.
“I express my sincere condolences on the passing of Alberto Varnero, a pioneering figure in Ethiopia’s construction sector since the late 1950s. His work has profoundly shaped the nation’s built environment and historical landmarks,” the Premier wrote.
Varnero, an Italian-born architect and engineer who made Ethiopia his home, played a central role in designing and executing some of the country’s most iconic public structures. His legacy includes a wide range of architectural marvels that have come to define Addis Ababa’s skyline and national pride.
Among his most notable contributions are the design and construction of Africa Hall—the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), a structure considered a symbol of Pan-African unity as well as the Addis Ababa City Hall, the Hilton Hotel, and the historic Commercial Bank of Ethiopia headquarters.
Varnero also worked on several high-profile projects during the country’s recent development phase, including the Millennium Hall, the Jimma Aba Jifar Airport expansion, the state-of-the-art Abrehot Library, the restoration and modernization of the National Palace, and the widely admired Unity Park within the Grand Palace compound.
“Alberto Varnero’s legacy stands in the foundations of these national landmarks and in the progress they symbolize,” Prime Minister Abiy noted, adding that Varnero’s work has become part of Ethiopia’s national identity and historical journey.
Beyond his professional achievements, Varnero was known for his strong dedication to mentoring young Ethiopian engineers and architects, helping to build local capacity in the fields of design, engineering, and project execution. His influence is evident not only in structures but also in the generations of professionals he helped inspire and train.
As Ethiopia continues to modernize its infrastructure, Alberto Varnero’s name remains etched in the architectural heritage of the country ,a symbol of visionary design and enduring public service. His death marks the end of an era, but his work will continue to shape the nation for generations to come.
The government and various professional associations are expected to organize tributes in honor of his legacy in the days ahead.
