Alfarag duty-free launch highlights Ethiopia’s global aspirations

ADDIS ABABA – The unveiling of a newly transformed Alfarag Duty-Free store at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is being hailed as a symbol of Ethiopia’s growing stature as a global destination.

In a grand launch event yesterday, Alfarag Trading PLC CEO Ayderus Hussien Mohammed said the new store represents more than luxury retail. It captures the spirit of a country on the rise. “This is more than just a retail space; it is a statement that Ethiopia is raising the bar,” he remarked.

Founded in 1932, Alfarag has built a legacy of excellence in trade, import, and retail. The company now cements its place as a pioneer in Ethiopia’s travel retail sector, unveiling what is now the largest duty-free store in the country designed to match the quality and ambiance of world-class airport retail hubs.

According to Ayderus, the launch aligns with the broader transformation of the capital city, with visible government-led modernization initiatives from urban beautification and road infrastructure to enhanced public spaces redefining Addis Ababa’s appeal. “Our city is becoming a global destination,” he said, emphasizing that private sector investment and civic engagement are essential to sustaining this momentum.

Addis Ababa Deputy Mayor Jantirar Abay also praised the milestone, describing the new store as a reflection of the capital’s rapid growth and global ambition.

“This exceptional shop is more than just a store; it symbolizes our city’s development and the impact of the private sector in building a modern Ethiopia,” he stated.

Alfarag has now inaugurated two fully refurbished duty-free outlets at Bole International Airport, including one flagship store crafted with high-end materials and design aesthetics. Created in collaboration with top international designers, the spaces seamlessly blend modern elegance with authentic Ethiopian hospitality, offering travelers a unique, premium shopping experience.

The store opening reinforces Ethiopia’s commitment to positioning itself not only as a major African aviation hub but also as a competitive retail and tourism destination. Alfarag’s achievement is being seen as a model for how local enterprises can elevate national image while offering global-standard services.
