-To host 15th vocational week to showcase innovation, boost skills

ADDIS ABABA — Bureau has created jobs for approximately 300,000 citizens over the past ten months, the Addis Ababa City Administration Labor and Skills Bureau announced.

According to the Bureau’s Enterprise and Technology Development Sector Head Mehammed Ligani, the jobs were created across key sectors including services, manufacturing, trade, and urban agriculture.

In addition to job placements, the city has also placed strong emphasis on workforce development. Mehammed noted that around 200,000 residents have received short-term, market-oriented training during the same period. Furthermore, 30,000 regular trainees are currently enrolled in 15 vocational and technical training institutions throughout the capital.

As part of its continued efforts to promote technical skills and innovation, the city is preparing to host the 15th Technical and Vocational Week Exhibition. The event is expected to showcase 187 new technologies and 77 research projects. It will also feature a competition among 500 trainees, alongside a fashion show highlighting the creative outputs of vocational students.

Mehammed added that the city’s 15 vocational and technical colleges are actively contributing to major urban development initiatives, including the ongoing corridor development projects. These institutions are expected to use the exhibition as a platform to exchange experiences, foster collaboration, and create stronger linkages across the technical education ecosystem.

The primary goal of the exhibition week is to promote problem-solving technologies, enhance the practical skills of trainees, encourage innovation, and stimulate healthy competition among colleges. It also aims to bridge the gap between training and production by connecting young professionals to real-world applications of their skills.

As the city scales up its employment generation and skills development programs, officials say these integrated efforts are critical for building a sustainable, job-rich urban economy.
