AASTU conducts research on nuclear energy for health, agriculture, power supply

ADDIS ABABA – Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) has announced that it is undertaking pioneering research into the application of nuclear energy in the fields of healthcare, agriculture, and energy generation.

AASTU’s Nuclear Technology Center Head Derejew Ayele told local media that the university is actively engaged in utilizing nuclear technology to address Ethiopia’s developmental needs. He emphasized that the research aims to harness nuclear energy to improve public health services, agricultural productivity, and the national power supply.

To enhance its capabilities, AASTU is forging strategic partnerships with leading institutions and centers of excellence in Russia, South Korea, and China — countries with extensive expertise in nuclear science and technology.

Following its recent designation as the African Center for Nuclear Science and Technology by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), AASTU is spearheading major research and development projects in collaboration with top international universities. The establishment of this center is a significant milestone that positions Ethiopia at the forefront of nuclear research on the continent.

The university has also launched a dedicated Center of Excellence in Nuclear Technology to support Ethiopia’s ambition to utilize nuclear energy as a sustainable and innovative solution to developmental challenges.

Derejew noted that ongoing research projects are already exploring various nuclear applications, including medical diagnostics and treatments, agricultural improvements through radiation-based technologies, and alternative energy generation methods.

The IAEA’s recognition of AASTU in April as the African Center for Nuclear Science and Technology reflects the university’s growing role in shaping the continent’s nuclear research landscape.

In a landmark development, a tripartite agreement was signed in late April between AASTU, the IAEA, and China’s prestigious Tsinghua University to support the establishment and advancement of the African Nuclear Science and Technology Center under AASTU’s leadership.

Ethiopia has already outlined a strategic vision for the use of nuclear technology across key sectors. The government is also making concerted efforts to raise public awareness about the benefits and peaceful applications of nuclear energy.

With this ambitious initiative, AASTU is poised to become a regional hub for nuclear science, advancing Ethiopia’s role in the global nuclear community.
