Ambassador emphasizes inclusivity in Nat’l Dialogue

ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) must engage all citizens across the country to ensure every voice is heard and valued to make the national consultation a success, a veteran diplomat said.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Biruk Mekonnen said that despite some criticisms regarding the process’s inclusivity, the Commission strives for neutrality and aims to create an environment where all voices can contribute freely.

He stated that to respond to the challenges of the process, the ENDC should commit to engaging all Ethiopians. Reconciliation and peace-building require time and persistence, but the dialogue is a significant step toward a future where every Ethiopian feels heard and valued, he added.

As to him, the dialogue process has made significant strides, with consultations held across the country. Recently, plans to begin the agenda-setting process in the Tigray state mark a critical opportunity for swift action toward lasting peace.

The voices from Tigray will contribute to the national conversation, highlighting the importance of inclusivity, he noted.

He further stated that the ENDC should operate independently and has actively engaged communities, political parties, civil society groups, and the Ethiopian Diaspora, ensuring comprehensive representation of Ethiopian voices.

He mentioned that with its rich ethnic diversity and political complexity, Ethiopia requires open and committed dialogue to untangle the fixed divisions that have sometimes fractured the nation.

The Ambassador noted that by facilitating conversations across ethnic, political, and regional lines, the dialogue fosters understanding, addresses historical grievances, and creates a platform for a shared vision of the future.

He mentioned that countries like South Africa and Colombia have shown that dialogue can effectively overcome division and build lasting peace. Ethiopia should learn from these examples, emphasizing inclusivity and patience. All stakeholders must have a seat at the table, and trust-building takes time, he underlined.

Biruk underscored that the National Dialogue aims to create a governance framework that is inclusive and fair for all citizens, addressing critical issues such as governance and resource distribution. This ambition reflects Ethiopia’s desire for a country where all people can thrive together in peace.

He called on the international community to play a crucial role in supporting Ethiopia’s National Dialogue. While the process is Ethiopian-led, external encouragement and expertise can provide valuable assistance.

He also mentioned that international partners should focus on fostering trust and offering technical support, while avoiding preconditions that may derail the dialogue.
