Modernizing national defense to deter emerging threats

In a significant development, Ethiopia has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to securing peace in the East African region. The government focusing on reinforces its military capabilities and intensifying diplomatic efforts. Through these strategies, Ethiopia aims to enhance regional stability and cooperation, fostering a safer and more prosperous environment for all neighboring countries.

Ethiopia’s strategic position in the Horn of Africa has historically made it a significant player in regional security matters. The country has faced various security challenges that demand a robust military response. Over the years, the country has participated in peacekeeping missions and counter-terrorism operations, particularly in Somalia, where the threat of Al-Shabaab has persisted.

The country’s government has acknowledged that conventional military strength alone is insufficient to confront the multifaceted threats present in the region. As such, the focus has shifted to a more integrated approach that combines military readiness with diplomatic initiatives and regional cooperation.

In recent months, Ethiopia has actively tracked military partnerships with neighboring countries, including Kenya, Djibouti, Somalia, and Tanzania, as well as other African nations like Algeria and Nigeria. These alliances aim to enhance regional security by combating terrorism and addressing shared threats.

Ethiopia recognizes that military strengthening cannot occur in isolation; regional cooperation is crucial for effectively tackling security challenges. Collaborative efforts involve joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and coordinated operations, fostering trust among East African nations.

The country’s leadership in these initiatives positions it as a key player in promoting lasting peace in a complex geopolitical landscape marked by conflicts and instability. By enhancing military capabilities and fostering partnerships, Ethiopia strives to create a safer region and contribute to a more secure continent, underscoring its commitment to collective security and cooperation.

Ethiopia’s military initiatives are also closely tied to counter-terrorism efforts. The ongoing threat of extremist groups, including Al-Shabaab and ISIS affiliates, necessitates a proactive approach to security. Ethiopia has been involved in various operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and preventing the spread of extremism.

The Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) have gained valuable experience through their involvement in peacekeeping missions and counter-terrorism operations in neighboring countries.

This experience has not only strengthened their operational capabilities but has also fostered collaboration with international partners. By sharing intelligence and resources, Ethiopia can enhance its effectiveness in combating terrorism on a broader scale.

Recently, the Ministry of Defense emphasized that Ethiopia has established a modern, professional, and resilient national defense force that embodies the aspirations and values of its citizens, showcasing the country’s commitment to national security and stability.

Mentioning the reform undertaken in the country’s security and defense institutions, including the defense force, the Minister of Defence, Aisha Mohammed, stressed that the military profession is a noble duty chosen by heroes that sacrifice their lives for the sovereignty and unity of the country.

Noting the change of war tactics globally, the defense minister said the Ethiopian National Defense Force has accordingly established a reliable force that protects the country by getting equipped with modern weapons.

The force, organized under multinational unity to guard the sovereignty of the nation, is the last stronghold, she added. Passing through difficult situations and competently fulfilling its missions, the force has now evolved into a well-equipped and organized modern army, the minister stated.

This commitment is not solely focused on ground forces; it extends to enhancing naval forces as well, reflecting a comprehensive approach to ensuring peace and stability in a tumultuous area. One of the most notable developments in Ethiopia’s military strategy is the emphasis on strengthening its naval capabilities.

Aisha further noted that armed force, Airforce, mechanized force, naval force, special force, and cyber force that foil and prevent attacks against Ethiopia from any direction are established.

Historically, Ethiopia has had limited naval forces due to its landlocked status following the loss of Eritrea in 1993. However, the government has recognized that a strong navy is essential for protecting its interests, particularly in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, which are crucial shipping routes.

The enhancement of naval forces serves multiple purposes. First, it allows Ethiopia to safeguard its maritime borders and ensure the security of trade routes.

In a region where piracy and maritime terrorism have posed significant threats, a capable navy can play a vital role in deterring such activities. Additionally, a robust naval presence can help Ethiopia collaborate more effectively with regional partners in maritime security initiatives.

Furthermore, Proxy wars have become a defining characteristic of the East African geopolitical landscape. Various external actors have sought to influence conflicts in the region, often leveraging local factions to achieve their objectives. This has led to prolonged instability and suffering for the affected populations.

Ethiopia’s military initiatives aim to reduce and eliminate the level of proxy warfare in the region. By strengthening its military presence and capabilities, Ethiopia can assert itself as a stabilizing force. The government’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of conflicts, combined with its military readiness, provides a foundation for addressing the underlying issues that fuel proxy wars.

According to the minister, the defense force has taken decisive action against those who attempted to destroy the constitutional order by force and consolidated peace and security in the country.

She also stated that law enforcement measures taken against extremist and terrorist groups have been successful in neutralizing threats, while operations have continued forcing them to surrender peacefully.

The army, in collaboration with other law enforcement institutions, has played a key role in stabilizing areas impacted by unrest, ensuring safe movement of people and goods.

The minister warned individuals and groups who defame the army, who sacrifice their lives for peace and sovereignty of the country on social media platforms, to desist from their acts.

She further revealed that Ethiopia’s historical adversaries are working in collaboration with traitors to derail the country’s development.

Those who govern through fear and drive their people into exile at every opportunity have no moral standing to criticize Ethiopia, the minister emphasized.

Aisha finally noted that Ethiopia is a nation of enduring peace and security; and the efforts to strengthen and modernize the defense force will be consolidated.

Furthermore, Ethiopia’s regional leadership role has been recognized by various African Union initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability. The country’s active participation in diplomatic efforts to mediate conflicts demonstrates its commitment to a comprehensive approach to security that goes beyond military solutions.

As the nation continues to navigate the complexities of regional security, its proactive approach serves as a model for other countries facing similar challenges. The commitment combined with diplomatic initiatives, lays the groundwork for a safer future in the region as well as in the continent peace stability.
