Private sector playing fair share to realize Digital Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – The private sector is playing a pivotal role in the realization of Digital Ethiopia, actively contributing to digital transformation and empowering Ethiopians to embrace digital payment systems, a private financial institution said.

In a significant development, Arifpay Financial Technology, in collaboration with Jami Web App, has launched an innovative system that enables social media influencers to receive cash gifts from their followers. This initiative not only promotes digital engagement but also provides a secure method for merchants to manage their finances.

In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, Arifpay’s Communications Manager Meskerem Dejene emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in achieving Digital Ethiopia. “Our application, launched in partnership with Ethio Telecom, marks the first licensed financial institution of its kind in Ethiopia,” she stated. “Online payment solutions are just the beginning of what we aim to offer.”

The collaboration seeks to establish a strong digital infrastructure, with the company already forming partnerships with 32 banks, including Ethio Telecom’s mobile payment service, Telebirr. Meskerem noted, “It is crucial for society to effectively adapt to digital systems. We have begun working with Ethio Telecom and the Ministry of Health, and we plan to expand these initiatives further.”

As service delivery transitions to digital platforms, she highlighted that the new system is developed using local knowledge, ensuring it meets the needs of the community while also creating employment opportunities for more than 200 individuals. “Our goal is not just to implement technology, but to create jobs and nurture a technology-literate workforce,” she added.

Jami Web App founder, Nathan Damtew, also expressed his enthusiasm about the new system. “The platform is designed to reward those who excel in service delivery. Two years ago, the lack of a digital payment system made such initiatives difficult. Now, with the rise of Arifpay and similar companies, the process has become more efficient.”

The platform is designed to support a wide range of social media influencers, including TikTok users, YouTubers, Instagram creators, and Facebook content producers—allowing them to monetize their audience engagement beyond likes and shares. “We have adapted global experiences to fit the Ethiopian context,” Nathan explained. “It provides an opportunity for creators to earn income by sharing their talents.”

The government’s supportive approach to private sector involvement is crucial, according to Meskerem. “Organizing as associations rather than as individuals is essential for launching a successful money transfer business,” she advised. The system offers not only point-of-sale machine services but also integrates wallet payments, enhancing user convenience.

As Ethiopia’s digital landscape continues to grow, both Arifpay and Jami Web App remain committed to expanding their services, contributing to a more connected and economically dynamic society. The future appears bright, with technology poised to transform daily life and stimulate economic growth.
