Minister: Modernization, nat’l pride define Ethiopia’s evolving army

ADDIS ABABA- Ethiopia has built a modern, professional, and resilient national defense force that reflects the pride and aspirations of its people, Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed said.

This remark came during a recent media briefing on the current state and future direction of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF).

Highlighting key achievements and reforms within Ethiopia’s defense and security institutions, the minister underscored that military service remains a noble and heroic calling-undertaken by individuals committed to protecting the nation’s sovereignty, peace, and unity.

Minister Aisha noted that Ethiopia has effectively adapted to the evolving nature of modern warfare by establishing a technologically advanced and well-organized military. The ENDF, she said, has emerged as a strong and dependable guardian of national sovereignty, characterized by professionalism and cohesion.

“Today, the ENDF is equipped with specialized divisions including ground forces, air force, mechanized units, a naval component, special operations forces, and a cyber command,” she said. “These units operate in a coordinated manner to defend the nation against any threat.”

She also revealed that the ENDF has taken successful measures to counter internal and external threats, including extremist and terrorist groups aiming to disrupt constitutional order. Many of these groups, she said, have been neutralized or compelled to surrender, contributing to greater national stability.

The defense minister praised the army’s role in stabilizing conflict-affected areas, ensuring the safety of citizens, and maintaining the uninterrupted flow of goods and services. She emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the ENDF and other law enforcement agencies.

Issuing a firm warning, Minister Aisha condemned individuals and groups who defame the military on social media platforms. “Despite the army’s sacrifices for national peace and sovereignty, some continue to spread misinformation. Such actions must stop,” she asserted.

She also accused historical adversaries of conspiring with internal actors to hinder Ethiopia’s development efforts.

“Those who rule through fear and drive their own people into exile have no moral authority to criticize Ethiopia,” she stated.

Concluding her remarks, Minister Aisha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further strengthening and modernizing the defense force. “Ethiopia remains a country of enduring peace and security, and we will continue advancing our defense capabilities with unwavering resolve,” she said.
