Model villages to boost rural livelihoods: Premier

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said the construction of model farmers’ villages will significantly improve rural livelihoods and promote healthier living standards across Ethiopia.

Speaking after launching the fourth model village in Werabet Shama Kebele, Hulbareg Woreda of the Silte Zone, Central Ethiopia State, the Prime Minister emphasized that the project is part of a broader rainy season goodwill and volunteer initiative focused on rural development.

“These homes will uplift the lives of local farmers and support healthier, more sustainable ways of living,” he stated.

The model villages are being constructed using affordable and environmentally friendly materials, with designs that reflect local culture while integrating modern features. The homes are built to support food self-sufficiency, better sanitation, and improved household security.

Since June 2, similar projects have been launched in other zones, including Halaba, Kembata, and Hadiya, as part of an effort to expand the initiative across the Central Ethiopia state.

During his visit to Silte Zone, PM Abiy and his delegation also toured the Atot Integrated Agro-Industry facility, where they observed encouraging levels of private sector engagement in agricultural processing. He praised such initiatives for aligning with Ethiopia’s broader development goals under the Bounty of the Basket initiative.

Since 2018, the Prime Minister has spearheaded annual housing development campaigns during the rainy season. This year’s shift toward rural communities under the Rural Corridor Development program reflects a renewed commitment to addressing the needs of Ethiopia’s agricultural population and promoting inclusive growth.
