Empowering Next Generation: Ethiopia elevates innovation through skills

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia is taking bold steps to turn innovation into economic impact by institutionalizing skills development and promoting knowledge-driven entrepreneurship.

The government’s commitment to technological self-reliance was on full display as the 4th National Skills Competition concluded here yesterday under the theme :“Bright Minds, Skilled Citizens.”

The competition attracted over 10,000 participants across 22 categories, drawing talent from all corners of the country. At the closing ceremony, the Prosperity Party Vice President Adem Farah reaffirmed the government’s strategy to convert innovative  ideas into market-ready solutions.

He emphasized that creativity, technical skills, and emerging technologies are essential for enhancing public service delivery, generating employment, and propelling national prosperity.

“Innovation and knowledge-based entrepreneurship are no longer optional—they are vital to meeting the economic aspirations of our citizens,” Adem noted.

The Vice President also highlighted the expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a core pillar of this strategy, aimed at nurturing visionary innovators capable of building a self-reliant, technology-driven economy. He called for stronger partnerships between the government, private sector, and educational institutions to accelerate this transformation.

Labour and Skills Minister Muferiat Kamil praised the improved quality  and scope of this year’s competition, noting its alignment with international standards.

She stated that the competition is not just about showcasing talent, but also about tackling societal challenges, fostering economic competitiveness, and empowering young people to build their future through skilled professions.

“The National Skills Competition is a springboard for knowledge exchange, innovation, and import substitution,” Muferiat said. She added that winners will be supported through the Ministry’s Skills Bank initiative, which provides access to resources, mentorship, and potential market linkages.

In recognition of excellence, winners were awarded substantial prizes: third-place finishers received bronze medals and 300,000 Birr, second-place winners earned silver medals and 400,000 Birr, and top winners received gold medals along with 500,000 Birr.

In the regional ranking, Amhara came third, Oromia took second, and Addis Ababa City Administration emerged as the overall winner, receiving a trophy and a vehicle.

Young innovators at the event expressed optimism that the platform would help them enter global markets. Many called on the government to support innovation hubs, provide access to workspaces, and facilitate production inputs to help them scale their ideas.

The event showcased the growing momentum behind Ethiopia’s innovation ecosystem and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fostering sustainable technologies and economic development. As a participant in the WorldSkills competition, Ethiopia is now preparing its national champions to represent the country on the global stage.
