
ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia is poised to host the 20th Regional Conference for Labour-Based Practitioners from May 19 to 23.
The conference, a significant event set to foster global dialogue on integrating labor-intensive approaches with sustainable infrastructure development, urban resilience, and inclusive employment.
The event comes at a crucial time, highlighting the urgent need to address the climate and environmental crisis through innovative job creation.
According to the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure (MoUI), Ethiopia’s selection as host underscores its proactive efforts in creating green and environmentally friendly jobs within numerous national infrastructure projects.
MoUI Minister Chaltu Sani announced at a press conference yesterday that the country’s commitment to this approach aligns it with global priorities in tackling environmental challenges. Preparations are finalized to welcome participants from across Africa and the world.
The ILO Country Director for Ethiopia, Khumbula Ndaba, expressed strong confidence in Ethiopia’s ability to host the conference, emphasizing its role in showcasing the country’s dedication to building sustainable workplaces amidst rapid urban growth. He further emphasized the conference’s potential to advance equitable economic growth through labor-based strategies.
The Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU) President Kassahun Follo highlighted the importance of Ethiopia hosting the conference as a platform to promote green job initiatives, enhance occupational safety standards, and foster inclusivity in employment practices.
Under the theme: “Resilient Communities and Healthy Environment: The ElIP Approach-Our Trade Union Perspective,” the conference is particularly timely. “In the face of multiple global crises, from climate change to economic instability, building resilient communities and protecting our environment has become critical imperatives for future generations,” he emphasized.
