It is common knowledge that Ethiopia is known for its Walia-Ibex, one of the members of the unique Semien Mountains’ fauna. Needless to say, all and sundry know like the palm of their hand about this endemic treasure.
Notwithstanding the fact that tourists from all over the world come to Ethiopia at various points in time to visit this endemic treasure, little has been done to familiarize the Walia-Ibex with the wider international community putting in place the experiences of other nations worldwide. Without a shadow of a doubt, much remains to be done. The gaps should be bridged before the situation set in motion going from the frying pan into the fire and getting off the track.
It is abundantly clear that unless people from all walks of life pull out all the stops to move the country’s tourism industry to new frontiers effectuating various effective techniques, achieving the intended target will not be as easy as falling off a log or like shooting fish in a barrel.
No matter what the challenges may be, all actors involved should do the whole kit and caboodle they can to catapult the sector to the next level of success. Furthermore, as nothing can be achieved overnight, they should leave no stone unturned to turn dreams into reality.
In actual fact, as pertinent bodies have not oiled the wheels of the country’s endemic treasure to the level expected by placing emphasis on Walia-Ibex, the sought-after goal has not been accomplished yet. On top of that the number of tourists that visit the Walia-Ibex of the country is not that large on the grounds that little promotion has been put in place.
It is revealed that Ethiopia is one of the wild mammal rich countries of Africa which possesses 320 species of wild mammals of which 36 are endemic about a quarter of which are large mammals. These mammals are now restricted to national parks and in protected areas. Natural habitat is rapidly being converted into landscapes dominated by humans and domestic animals worldwide. Intensive human impact from agriculture, house encroachment, livestock, grazing, and fuel wood and timber use, poaching and so on has led to a severe decline of the national resources of Semien Mountains National Park.
Walia ibex, which is one of the members of the unique Semien Mountains’ fauna, has faced such problem. It is listed as endangered in IUCN Red List Threatened species.
I would go as far as to say Pandas are synonymous with China’s cultural identity. They place much emphasis on them. Frankly speaking, as I have explored the various parts of the country one thing that stands out is wherever I go panda-themed toys and images are all over the place. Without any exaggeration from crowded places to quite souvenir shops, the panda’s likeness is a constant presence highlighting its special place in Chinese culture.
As I explored these realities firsthand a broad range of ideas, feelings and thoughts embarked on coming in and out of my mind for the most part on the subject of the Walia ibex. The only thing I know is that the Ethiopian national football team is named after Walia ibex. But when we delve into the matter, a long journey remains to reach where other nations have reached in promoting touristic spots.
The other thing that I witnessed firsthand is the large number of domestic tourists that visit pandas. Nothing makes them happier than seeing pandas and other tourist attractions.
When we see in Ethiopia the number of tourists paying a visit to Walia Ibex is not that large comparing to others nations. Taking the existing reality on the ground into account, pertinent bodies should do everything they can to take the industry to the next level of success especially the Walia ibex.
As the people of China attach due importance to Panda, they have recently started Golden Panda Awards. Although there are various awards in Ethiopia, none of them have been named after the Walia ibex.
The Golden Panda Awards is an international cultural event hosted by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the People’s Government of Sichuan Province in recognition of outstanding achievement in film and television. The giant panda was chosen as a symbol for its cultural significance.
The blended event seeks to put the power of images to work in the service of cultural exchange and dialogue bringing different civilizations together to learn from one another in the interests of a shared future for all.
The Golden Panda Awards are based in Chengdu, a city of splendid natural beauty, rich cultural treasures spanning a history of three thousand years, and passionate film enthusiasts actively supporting the Golden Panda Awards.
The professional international jury of renowned figures of global influence guarantees the integrity and artistic quality of the awards. Professionals, celebrities and dignitaries come together at the Golden Panda International Cultural Forum to express and be inspired. The highlight of the event is the Golden Panda Awards Ceremony, where stars gather, winners receive their due recognition, and aesthetics occupy center stage.
