
• Over 130 new industries launched, 207 engaged in export trade
ADDIS ABABA – The manufacturing industry in Addis Ababa has achieved a production capacity of 64 percent, surpassing the national average of 61 percent, according to Deputy Mayor and Industry Development Bureau Head Jantirar Abay.
Speaking at the closing of the Let Ethiopia–Addis Ababa Produce Expo held at the Addis Convention Centre, Jantirar highlighted major strides in revitalizing the city’s manufacturing sector. He said the Let Ethiopia Produce movement has enabled 68 previously idle industries to resume production by resolving longstanding challenges
Currently, more than 3,700 manufacturing industries are operating in the capital. While capacity has significantly improved, Jantirar noted that a 36 percent gap remains and that extensive efforts are underway to reach the national target of 85 percent production capacity by the year 2030.
He emphasized that policy implementation and legal frameworks are a key to unlocking further potential in the sector. Ongoing initiatives are focused on enhancing industrial output, job creation, and youth employment. He also mentioned that 70 percent of the city’s revenue is being directed toward infrastructure development that supports industrial growth
The Industry Development Bureau Manufacturing Industry Sector Head Paulos Kussa said that many investors from the service sector are entering manufacturing, particularly in areas of import substitution and export.
He reported that 131 new industries have launched production and 207 industries are currently exporting goods. In addition, 1996 industries are producing items that substitute imports, while 156 enterprises have transitioned into small-scale manufacturers. These developments have led to the creation of more than 12,000 jobs over the past nine months.
City officials reiterated their commitment to expanding industrial capacity, encouraging innovation, and positioning Addis Ababa as a key player in national and regional economic transformation.
