
ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian National Archives and Library Agency has paid tribute to the esteemed author Belata Mersi Hazen Woldekerkos, recognizing his invaluable contribution to Ethiopian literature and culture.
During a special honorary ceremony held on Thursday, the agency named one of its halls after Belata Mersi Hazen, celebrating his enduring literary legacy. The event aimed not only to honor his memory but also to inspire future generations by promoting the rich tradition of Ethiopian literature.
The commemoration featured speeches from prominent literary figures, in-depth discussions on Woldekerkos’s work, and readings from his celebrated writings. Attendees reflected on the author’s dedication and the timeless value of his manuscripts.
The National Archives and Library Agency Director General Yekunoamlak Mezgebu emphasized the agency’s commitment to preserving the country’s literary heritage.
“Belata Mersi Hazen Woldekerkos devoted much of his life to creating impactful works. For those who have made significant cultural contributions, we will continue to honor them,” he said.
The recognition also serves as a broader initiative to encourage public engagement with traditional Ethiopian literature, much of which remains preserved in manuscript form at the agency.
In a heartfelt address, the late author’s son Ameha Blata, expressed his gratitude for the tribute.
“I deeply appreciate the agency’s efforts. My father’s manuscripts, now housed here, should serve as a source of inspiration and promote a culture of reading and referencing our traditional literary heritage,” he noted.
The ceremony highlighted the vital role of literary preservation in maintaining Ethiopia’s cultural identity and honored a man whose work continues to resonate across generations.
