Industry-university linkage crucial for economic dev’t

ADDIS ABABA – Bahir Dar University has emphasized the importance of industry-academia collaboration as a critical driver of economic growth and development. The university highlighted that strengthening ties between industries and higher education institutions is essential for sustainable economic expansion.

The third National Industry Forum, organized by Bahir Dar University in collaboration with the Manufacturing Industry Development Institute, was held yesterday under the theme “The Role of Triple Helix for Sustainable Economic Development.”

Speaking at the forum, Bahir Dar University President Mengesha Ayele(PhD) stated that industry-university collaboration is essential in translating research into practical applications. He particularly underscored the role of the textile and fashion industries as key engines for job creation and economic progress. He reiterated that university-industry partnerships play a fundamental role in driving sustainable economic growth.

Mengesha noted that Bahir Dar University is establishing itself as a center of excellence in textile and fashion technology, fostering innovation and job opportunities. The Triple Helix model, which integrates government, academia, and industry, aims to accelerate sustainable economic development in Ethiopia. He emphasized that the forum serves as a platform to facilitate the transfer of research and innovation into the industry, with the Department of Textile and Fashion Technology playing a pivotal role.

“We aim to be more than just an academic institution. We strive to be an industrial incubator, a technology transfer hub, and a catalyst for economic development in the manufacturing sector, particularly in textile, leather, and fashion technology. These industries are not just economic sectors; they are engines of employment and innovation,” Mengesha stated.

He also highlighted the need to integrate industry-driven curricula to enhance Ethiopia’s competitiveness regionally and globally. He stressed the importance of Research and Development (R&D) innovation clusters, leveraging smart manufacturing and digitalization to advance sustainable textile and digital fashion industry solutions.

Labour and Skills State Minister Solomon Soka also emphasized the necessity of integrating academia and industry to boost Ethiopia’s economy. He pointed out that university-industry collaboration is crucial for ensuring reliable economic growth and aligning national strategies with industrial development.

“Strategic partnerships are essential for maintaining long-term stability and accelerating economic progress,” he noted.

He further elaborated that institutional coordination is vital for economic growth, particularly in the textile and garment sector. Strengthening university-industry linkages will enable the effective implementation of national development plans.

The Ministry of Industry Manufacturing Industries Development Institute (MIDI) General Director Milikessa Jagama highlighted the importance of adopting sustainable practices in Ethiopia’s fashion sector. He commended Bahir Dar University for spearheading transformative initiatives that contribute to the country’s economic future.
