ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) emphasizes that regional digital infrastructure, regulatory cooperation, and a strong focus on personal data privacy and security are pivotal for Ethiopia to significantly advance its global trade.
In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, ECA Director-General Balcha Reba highlighted that fostering digital infrastructure, collaborating on regional regulations, and cultivating digital literacy skills are paramount for facilitating seamless digital trade and integration within the continent and globally.
He further stated that developing an integrated internet ecosystem not only supports Ethiopia’s digital ecosystem and socioeconomic development but also promotes trade integration among IGAD member countries and beyond.
Furthermore, he underscored that robust personal data protection is crucial not only for Ethiopia’s progress towards the African Continental Free Trade Agreement(ACFTA) but also for its journey to World Trade Organization(WTO) membership.
“The ECA, as a regulatory body, is preparing to implement awareness-raising activities and directives to promote understanding and responsible practices regarding data collection and dissemination,” the Director-General noted.
Drawing inspiration from successful African countries, he urged policymakers and regulatory bodies to harmonize policies and regulations to create an enabling environment for innovation and growth.
He emphasized that the region, with its diverse cultures, economies, and perspectives, can unlock the full potential of the internet by aligning regional cooperation, pooling resources, and implementing joint initiatives that foster a shared future.
“We can leverage the internet’s power to address regional challenges, promote knowledge sharing, strengthen cooperation, build robust networks, and establish alternative power supply mechanisms,” he stated.
Recognizing the transformative impact of the internet on economies, societies, and daily lives, Balcha stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to drive resilient connectivity for all, build trust in the digital realm, and ensure the responsible use of technology.
Moreover, he noted that in the rapidly evolving digital landscape, cyber security and robust policy frameworks are essential to protect data and privacy and combat misinformation through the promotion of digital literacy.
