ADDIS ABABA – During a high-level retreat on African Union (AU) Institutional Reforms in Nairobi, Kenya yesterday, President Taye Atske-Selassie underlined the need for collective political will to achieve the AU’s reform goals.
President Taye highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency, stating that the AU “Can stand on its feet only if we can meet the goals we set to cover 75 percent of our program budget and 25 percent of peace support missions.” He stressed the need for innovative financing mechanisms and an enabling environment across various sectors.
Acknowledging past efforts, including streamlining summits and reforming commissions, President Taye outlined five key areas for focus like inclusivity, financial sovereignty, prioritization and Streamlining, strong dialogue and global coherence.
He also emphasized the importance of addressing the lack of a dedicated peace support operation directorate within the AU and advancing creative financing, including encouraging private investment from within the continent.
President Taye concluded by reaffirming Ethiopia’s full support to the AU Institutional Reform Agenda and emphasizing that the success of this endeavor hinges upon the collective political will of all member states.
