Ethiopia champions endogenous technologies at Greater South Fair

ADDIS ABABA–Endogenous technologies hold transformative potential to empower communities in the Global South by leveraging local knowledge, traditions, and lived experiences rather than relying on imported ideas, the Minister of Innovation and Technology (MinT) has disclosed.

The first edition of the Greater South Fair for Endogenous Technologies (GreSFET) kicked off yesterday at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Innovation and TechnologyMinister, Belete Molla (PhD), highlighted the critical role of promoting endogenous knowledge and technologies in empowering communities. “These innovations are deeply rooted in societal contexts, cultures, and communities,” Belete said, emphasizing how fairs like GreSFET provide a platform to celebrate such locally driven innovations.

According to Belete, endogenous technologies have the transformative power to deliver solutions that arise from the rich and diverse tapestry of local knowledge, traditions, and lived experiences. “These technologies are born of our challenges, guided by our perspectives, and designed to empower our communities in meaningful and sustainable ways,” he added.

Belete reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to harnessing the potential of homegrown innovations to transform lives. He noted that the MinT is working tirelessly to nurture an enabling environment where local ideas flourish. He also stressed the importance of technological innovations as tools for social and economic empowerment in the Global South.

The Organization of Southern Cooperation (OSC)Secretary General Manssour bin Mussallam also addressed the event, stating that promoting endogenous technologies means fostering the development of solutions rooted within societies. Highlighting the necessity of these technologies for equitable and sustainable development, Manssour underscored how GreSFET offers visibility to startups, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

“GreSFET acts as a catalyst for economies of scale, empowering entrepreneurs and students to become drivers of technological advancements,” he added.

The two-day event, co-hosted by MInT and OSC, brings together participants from 14 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Featuring 41 startups and technology companies, GreSFET provides a unique platform for showcasing innovations and fostering cross-regional collaboration, it was learned.
