Safaricom Ethiopia expands network in Hararghe

Boosts community support with major donations

ADDIS ABABA- Safaricom Ethiopia has launched its network expansion in the Chiro cluster, extending coverage to 32 cities and 114 sites across Western and Eastern Hararghe. This initiative aims to enhance telecommunications in the region, bolstering local economies and improving connectivity for residents.

During the launch events in Kulubi, Chelenko, Karamille, Hirna, and Chiro, Safaricom Ethiopia CEO WimVanhelleputte highlighted the company’s commitment: “We have established shops in Chiro and other key towns, making our products and services more accessible while creating jobs.”

In celebration of the upcoming Ethiopian New Year, Safaricom integrated its network expansion with a robust community engagement initiative. On September 2, 2024, the company donated 10 laptops, 2 routers, 1,200 exercise books, and 150 pens to Chercher High School in Western Hararghe, along with six months of free Wi-Fi for the school’s computer lab. The donation, valued at 1.1 million Birr, benefits 100 low-income students.

In a second engagement, Safaricom donated 50 laptops, 10 Wi-Fi routers, 6,000 exercise books, and 750 pens to 5 schools in Harar, providing six months of free internet. The donation, worth over 5 million Birr, was raised by the Harari State Council Deputy Speaker Amina Abdulkerim, for helping reduce dropout rates and supporting online learning.

Safaricom Ethiopia remains committed to fostering economic growth and driving positive change in the communities it serves, according to a press release the operator sent to The Ethiopian Herald.
