-Ethiopia to receive 42 mln
ADDIS ABABA – The European Union (EU) has approved an additional 122 million Euros in support for the Horn of Africa (HoA), with Ethiopia set to receive 42 million Euros from this package.
The approved budget will be directed towards humanitarian aid for those affected by conflict, drought, and floods in the region. This support will provide essential supplies such as food, water, nutritious meals, and hygiene products to vulnerable communities in urgent need.
The funding will also see Somalia and South Sudan each receiving 40 million Euros, bringing the EU’s total aid to the HoA to 421 million Euros for this year alone.
The European Union Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič emphasized the region’s vulnerability to various threats, which necessitated the increase in support from the EU.
The EU Ambassador to Ethiopia Roland Kobia highlighted the EU’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia in times of need: “As one of the major international partners for Ethiopia, the EU continues to provide developmental support to all Ethiopian regions. This action is another timely contribution to complement humanitarian efforts and ensure that our work in humanitarian aid is mutually reinforcing.”
With around 20 billion Euros in annual aid, the EU remains the largest single donor to Africa globally.
