UNHRC experts complement transitional justice, joint investigation: Daniel Bekele

ADDIS ABABA– The U.N Human Right Experts on Ethiopia have the desire to complement the transitional justice process and the joint investigation team’s (JIT) investigation, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said.

The joint investigation report mandated the U.N Human Rights Council (UNHRC) experts to support the transitional justice process per the permission of the government, the EHRC Chief Commissioner Daniel Bekele (PhD) told local media.

“The U.N Human Right Experts on Ethiopia was established by the UNHRC not exactly to replace the work of the joint investigation, but to complement it.”

According to Daniel, while forming the experts, the UNHRC clearly acknowledged and thanked the work done by the joint investigation team. The demand to establish an additional mechanism to build upon the work of the joint investigation resulted in the formation of the UNCHR Experts.

The UNCHR experts are supposed to complement the investigation work that was done jointly by the EHRC and the U.N Human Rights Commission joint work.

“We have not yet seen the full report of the U.N Commission of Human Rights experts, but my own conversation with the experts have told us that they have this understanding of their mandates,” the commissioner remarked.
