Two prominent figures receive AAU honorary doctorate

ADDIS ABABA– For his meticulous leadership that enables to solve the age-old differences in Ethiopian Islamic leadership and bring in Muslim unity, Islamic Affairs Supreme Council President Mufti Haji Omar Idris received Saturday an Honorary Doctorate from Addis Ababa University.

Likewise, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde GebreMariam received similar honor for his success in consolidating Ethiopian leading status in Africa’s aviation industry. The university further stated that Tewolde was awarded for his extraordinary leadership that enables the Ethiopian flag carrier to support government’s goal of alleviate poverty, improve social services and register rapid economic growth.

‘’The rapid and sustainable growth Ethiopian has been registering over years has also been taken into account for the CEO’s selection,’’ the university added. The university also recognized Mufti Omar’s active participation for the first peaceful transition of power in Ethiopian Islamic leadership since the establishment of the Supreme Council some 40 years back.

In his acceptance address, the Mufti said the people of Ethiopia should work hand in glove with the government to keep the country’s peace and stability and cherish the long-acclaimed religious tolerance. He also called on the people to fight the destructive activities of anti-peace elements whose agendas are not the peaceful spread of religion via putting aside religious differences.

For his part, CEO Tewolde said that the visionary leadership and energetic employees who nurture strong sense of belongings and professionalism were the main factors to the airliner in achieving its Vision 2025 seven years prior and preparing a new Vision 2035. Ethiopian connected Addis Ababa with over 120 destinations across the globe through 120 ultramodern aircrafts.

He also expressed the management’s commitment to maintain Ethiopian status of among the best flying carriers in the globe through hugely investing in capacity building and technology whilst utmost priority is given to aviation safety. Established in 1950, AAU is widely considered to be the leading Ethiopian University.
