ADDIS ABABA – Stakeholders who come from various political parties, democratic institutions, institutions of higher education and the likes discussed yesterday the draft law to reestablish the Electoral Board of Ethiopia.
As the country is undertaking fundamental reforms, the Electoral Board and the election law are among the major priorities of the political reform agenda. Opening the discussion forum, Prof. Tilahune Teshome, Legal and Judicial Affairs Advisory Council Chairperson said stakeholders should discharge their respective responsibilities and be committed enough to make the coming national elections free, fair and credible.
The ideas raised in the discussion forum will be used as input to reestablish the Electoral Board and amend Proclamation No. 532/2007, which has been the election law of the country for a decade. The discussion is expected to lay the foundation to establish an independent Electoral Board, which has not been the case so far in Ethiopia.
It was also mentioned that the fact that stakeholders openly take part is such forums would enable the future Electoral Board to be credible in the eyes of the general public.
