Diplomatic relations are established between countries based on mutual benefits and respect for each other’s sovereignty. These relations can extend from economy to politics and military which enhance cooperation and ties between nations. For diplomatic relations to thrive, it is imperative for countries to maintain internal stability, and achieve a strong economy as they play a crucial role in determining relations with others.
However, some countries may attempt to use other countries internal affairs for their own political gain, which can further cause interference and exacerbate existing problems. For example, some nations may attempt to influence other states in the name of human rights issues. External intervention is rampant when it comes to African, South American, and some Asian countries, complicating problems and hindering the nation’s efforts to overcome their internal issues.
Despite the challenges, most countries prioritize maximizing the benefits of diplomatic relations and working with other nations that share common goals and principles, creating a sense of brotherhood and solidarity. While diplomatic relations have their weaknesses, nations continue to strengthen their relations with each other in pursuit of mutual benefits, building bridges instead of walls. Ethiopia is a nation with strong, widespread diplomatic relations across the globe.
The country is recognized by 190 countries and is an active member of various regional and global organizations like the United Nations, the African Union, and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development. Ethiopia’s foreign policy is focused on regional integration and cooperation, especially through the active participation of organizations such as the African Union and IGAD. Ethiopia’s role in peacekeeping missions across the continent has contributed to its reputation as a promoter of stability and security in the region.
In recent years, Ethiopia has also adopted an economic diplomacy approach to promote trade and investment, contributing to economic growth and development in the nation. The country has pursued stronger economic ties with other nations, especially in the global south, and has taken significant steps to improve Ethiopia’s legal framework and ease of doing business, including setting up industrial parks.
The country also stands also as an active and efficient diplomatic player in the international community with a clear focus on regional integration and economic growth. Its commitment to promoting peace and cooperation throughout the African continent has earned it a reputation as an example of progress and stability. The country’s foreign policy is anchored in its commitment to peace and security, as demonstrated by its leadership in peacekeeping missions across Africa.
The country’s approach to conflict resolution is rooted in constructive dialogue and negotiation. Ethiopia is consistently called upon to mediate in the Horn of Africa region and has played an instrumental role in resolving disputes between Sudan and South Sudan. The country’s efforts in facilitating dialogue between Ethiopia and Egypt regarding the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam have also been widely acknowledged by the international community.
The United Nations, African Union, and European Union have all praised Ethiopia for its dedicated efforts toward promoting peace and security in Africa. Its impressive diplomatic record coupled with its focus on economic growth has established Ethiopia as a true global leader.
Ethiopia has successfully navigated multiple challenges in recent years, with one of its greatest accomplishments being the peace agreement reached with Eritrea in 2018. This deal put an end to the border conflict between the two nations that had resulted in significant loss of life during the 1998-2000 war. Ethiopia’s ability to resolve this issue through peaceful negotiations has not only earned it the respect of the international community but also highlights its commitment to finding African solutions for African problems.
The successful resolution of the northern Ethiopian conflict through diplomatic talks is another testament to Ethiopia’s readiness to solve conflicts through peaceful means. Political reforms, peace agreements, and economic partnerships are just some of the measures that have contributed to stabilizing the region and mitigating conflicts. As a result, Ethiopia has become a beacon of hope in Africa, and its efforts have earned it the admiration of the international community.
Ethiopia’s diplomatic relations are marked by a focus on regional cooperation, economic development, and positioning itself as a leader both regionally and globally. In recent years, Ethiopia’s diplomatic relations with the international community had deteriorated due to the northern-Ethiopian conflict. However, the successful peace agreement has resulted in a revival of diplomatic relations, with countries such as Colombia and Finland expressing their goodwill towards Ethiopia. Overall, Ethiopia’s diplomatic efforts have not only enhanced its international image but also contributed to stability and peace in the region.
Political science and international relations analysts, interviewed by EPA, have emphasized that the relationship between countries is based on the pursuit of their perpetual interests. However, the principle of everlasting benefit is considered more important than having a perpetually friendly country. Nevertheless, every country has its own foreign policies based on short- and long-term strategies to achieve its goals, whether it is for proximity, business, politics, or citizen-to-citizen relations, and each country’s strategy is shaped by its constitution.
Despite the differences, a country’s strong diplomacy is demonstrated by its ability to handle internal pressures, needs, and self-governance without external interference. This strength comes from the country’s internal strength and the institutional capacity to negotiate through diplomacy.
The ability to withstand man-made and natural obstacles and maintain a healthy economy is also a sign of a country’s diplomatic strength. Ethiopia’s foreign policy is said to originate from within and uses internalization as a starting point and strategy for international relations. The ability to withstand economic, military, and international propaganda is considered a demonstration of a country’s institutional capabilities and the strength of its international relationships.
The country, unfortunately, has been involved in a conflict for the past two years. Though it was an internal issue, it has attracted outside forces, causing damage to the nation’s economy, reputation, and performance. This has been putting the country’s national security in jeopardy as well.
The consequences of war have also been severe with implications that affect every side of life, from the economy to the loss of human life. Civil wars are especially damaging as they worsen the economic crisis for both groups, reducing the nation’s ability to function. Furthermore, human rights violations often occur during times of war, leading to international condemnation and even intervention from other countries.
Some countries use such violations as pretexts to interfere with other countries affairs. Sadly, Ethiopia’s previously good international reputation has been tarnished by these conflicts, with some nations using this situation to meet their own needs. But, the country’s diplomatic clout is back on the previous path following the Pretoria peace deal that ended the conflict in the northern part of the country. The agreement has somehow filled the space for external intervention.
