ECA marks Russian Language Day

 ADDIS ABABA – The Russian Language Day was celebrated last Tuesday at the headquarters of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UN ECA) here. At the event , UN ECA Executive Director Antonio Pedro said the Russian is one of the six languages at the United Nations and has been playing big role in promoting linguistic and cultural diversity around the world.

 The day was marked by Russian folk dances , Addis ABABA Russian Centre for Science and Culture Director Vyacheslav Konnik made a presentation on teaching Russian in Africa, Ethiopian graduates of Russian universities presented Russian poetry recital (poems by A.

Pushkin and N. Gumilyov) along with a presentation about the Kamchatka Territory and a quiz on Russian history and literature. The International Organization for Science and Culture (UNESCO) has decided to  celebrate Russian Language Day on June 6th, the birthday of Alexander Pushkin, the father of modern language and literature.

In connection with the event, an exhibition of photographs of Russian tourist attractions, Russian art and traditional souvenirs were staged .The day was graced by representatives of diplomatic missions and UNECA, compatriots, graduates of Soviet and Russian universities, officials of the Russian Embassy in Ethiopia and the public.
