Adera (Entrusted)

 BY KFLEEYESUS ABEBE

The ugly truth

We don’t want to hear

We don’t want to believe

There is no choice

There is no other way

There wouldn’t even be alternative

The way to the future

The path to peace

The step to grow

The road to democracy

The means to survival

The deed to be dignified

The call to be human

Is nothing but a commitment

It is to say “no”

We should know:

It is a goal-demanding courage

It is a fight against evil

But it is an avoidable

’cause it is a defining battle

A barrier we skip to the promise land

Like Lincoln fought against the South

We shall be resolute to face the evil

Like Lincoln, it should be our sacred duty

to preserve Ethiopian unity,

to defeat greed, animosity and irrationality

 Like Lincoln abolish slavery

It is possible to win against ethnicity

Like Lincoln said: American aren’t enemies but friends

We also stand to say:

Ethiopians aren’t enemies but friends

The choice is to neutralize hatred

To crush illiteracy with education

To discipline the bully

Nothing but to pay all the cost

It is always “payable to the bearer on demand”

Till that day the evil keeping lurking

The day stays gloomy

We itch, the grief mounting

mounting, mounting, mounting

To push us to last resolution.

(*Adera can be roughly translated to entrust)
