The government seems giving due concern in the expansion and reconstruction of urban zoos utilizing for multi-facilitated purposes, according to the Addis Zoo Park.
Addis Zoo Park Director General, Dr. Girma Mengesha said that scenery and impressive setting of Addis Zoo Park is under construction aiming to conserve habitant of wild animals and recreational areas.
He added that as the survival of wild animals and natures in general is going to be in worry some, looking for mechanism to conserve the ecosystem is critical to sustain the ecological blessings and constructing Zoo Park is a means to safeguard the natural law of the ecosystem.
‘‘The Addis Zoo Park will be constructed in the consideration of creating main ecosystems of the country such as Blue Nile River Basin, Awash valley, Semien Mountain, Danakil depression and Harana forestery. Especially, the Blue Nile River Bank ecosystem is almost finished and then reached over 95 percent. There is undone business related with electric installation and water supply facilitation.
Dr. Girma pointed out that as the lion deserve to reside on forestry, typical expression of the wild animals’ cottages in account of dry and wet conditions should be included in the construction of the park and such tasks are demanded a working trend to construct the park in accordance with natural habitats.
The park will have children play ground, commercial stores, maintenance faculty and veterinary ware house, that aiming to conduct study and research about animal characteristics and to have medical treatment services, as to him.
The Director noted that to conserve unique feature and endemic natures of the wild animals, the zoo park has long term plan to involve in the assignment of animal breeding and for enabling to do inquire and study regarding animal behaviors.
He stated that the zoo management makes itself ready to bring 4 lions, hippo and crocodile inside the park which is the very precondition of designing of the park.
According to him, 6 kilo Anbessa Gebi Zoo Park is also under expansion to solve constraints of wild animal’s shelters in terms of quality and decoration.
Adding he said that while 28 million birr is allocated for the expansion of 6 killo Anbessa Gebi Zoo Park and 91 million birr is budgeted for reconstruction of Addis Zoo Park.
Besides, lack of skilled manpower, financial constraints, contractor procedures and bureaucratic red tape are the main challenges which hindered the park not to be completed on time, he underlined.
