ADDIS ABABA-The Oromia State Council re-elected yesterday ShimelisAbdisa as the State’s president for the next five years.

The president took the oath of office as of yesterday. In his inaugural speech the president vowed to prioritize ensuring lasting peace both at local and national levels. He said the terrorists, TPLF and Shene, which are antithesis of peace would be destroyed for good.

Stating that Ethiopia’s sovereignty had been protected by the sacrifices of ancestors, he said there is no way to serve a client state and government. “We’ll ensure lasting peace in the near future.”

Shimelis also indicated that the new state government would work towards meeting the demands of the people of the state.

Shimeles has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, political science and a master’s degree in peace and security. Meanwhile, Saada Abdurahman was elected as Speaker of the Oromia State Council.

In her speech, she said the public gave the new member of the council the chance to serve, casting votes in difficult situations, not because it does not understand that there were people who failed to deliver per expectations. “We’re given a chance to serve the people rectifying the past misdeeds.” The council also endorsed members of the state’s cabinet that the president designated.

The council also elected Awolu Abdi as Deputy President of the state. Awolu is serving as the president of African Leadership Excellence Academy. He has also served in various senior positions in the state. Awolu is Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA). The honorary certificate of farewell has been handed over to the ex- members.
