Egypt deliberately leaves its rainwater untapped to justify monopoly over the Nile

ADDIS ABABA – Egypt’s adequate annual rainfall potential had not been utilized despite its abundance along the Mediterranean coastline, experts highlighted. Rainwater potential of Egypt is estimated to be the same as Ethiopia though it shows variations across spatial weather and geographic locations.

However, Cairo has been reporting low rainwater resources to perpetuate its monopoly over the Nile. According to Sept. 2015 Climate Change Information Fact Sheet on Egypt, USAID, Egypt’s precipitation along the Mediterranean coastline averages more than 200 mm/ yr [UNDP].

For long, Egypt has been wrongfully claiming that the Nile is its only source of water. According to reports by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the annual precipitation in Egypt is significant that could enable the country to get an estimated 51 billion cubic meters.

The amount is nearly equivalent to the country’s claim of “share” of Nile waters, a hydraulic commentator who rather preferred anonymity told this writer.
