ADDIS ABABA – Gambella State has planted 14,000 tree seedlings on the launching day of the national Green Legacy campaign. Preparations are underway to plant over 5.5 million seedlings this year.
Kassahun Molla, State Agriculture and Resource Development Bureau, Natural Resource and Study Usage Director told Ethiopian Press Agency that during the launching day of the second green legacy campaign, the state has planted 14,000 seedlings.
According to him, more than two million seedlings are for forest and other services, 1.25 million for food, and 400 thousand for animal feed. The remaining 1.5 million will be used for multiple purposes. Most seedlings will be planted on basin development, degraded and affected land.
Some 3,980 hectares of land have been set for plantation. So far, 900,000 will have been prepared. In addition to the seedlings prepared for planting, seedlings are ready to grow in one month like Moringa seedling. Of the seedlings planted in 2019, 83 percent of were confirmed prolific, he pointed out.
“On the first day, the participation of Gambella State plants 14,000 tree seedlings the public exceeded expectations. By overcoming last year’s seedling limitation and other gaps, the state is well prepared for success.”
According to the Director, the seedling program will be undertaken in all zones of the State, zones, woredas and cities. In some zones, the seedling activity will be performed before entering the Ethiopian summer season as water fills in them. The activity is being undertaken by keeping social distancing to prevent COVID-19’s spread.
