New giant Mosque plan augments COVID-19 clouded Eid celebration

 ADDIS ABABA – This year’s Eid Al-Fitr is unique for it is to be celebrated at a time when the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council received a land from Addis Ababa City Administration to build the biggest Mosque in the capital.

This week, Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Takele Uma, has handed over 30, 000 square meters of land to Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council for the construction of Ethiopia’s biggest mosque. The site of construction which involves praying house and research center is located opposite Africa Union headquarters.

The construction of the mosque is expected to start within three months and will be financed by the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council. Both the design and its contractors have not yet been ready but it will house research center, house of Quran, Museum and more, it was learnt.

The Council has also expressed best wishes , Eid Mubark, to all Muslims and advised the public to pray at home for the holiday to protect themselves from the coronavirus pandemic.

Accordingly the Council announced that the 1441st of Eid Al-Fitir will be celebrated as of this evening if the crescent moon is spotted, or tomorrow. President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Mufti Haji Omer Endris has delivered Eid Mubarak wishes to all Muslims on the 1441st celebration of Eid -Al -Fitr celebrations.

The President of the Supreme Council urged the Muslim Community to observe the Holy Day at home for there is no mass Eid Prayer due to coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand the public should follow the guidelines from the ministry of health which bans large gatherings, Mufti said.

He also advised the Muslims to show kindness and compassion to the needy by sharing meals, and offering other supports.
