Supporting neighbors: The other face of Ethiopianism

Following the government’s announcement relating to the stay at home to halt the spread of COVID 19, Ethiopians are exhibiting their commitments by helping each other.

This help varies from individual to institutional levels. Using this as a ground The Ethiopian Herald had approached some individuals seeking their comments on the issue.

Merawi Nigusie is a pastor at Renewal Church, according to him, stretching out hands in times of crisis is not strange to Ethiopians.

He said, the current pandemic has threatened the whole word. Its intensity would be high on those countries that are economically weaker. Ethiopia is among these countries.

For this reason helping one another is not an option. It is our obligation.

“When we decide to support the needy and the vulnerable, we attached attention to basic supplies such as food items and sanitizers.”

Due to several reasons, in times of such dreadful situation, some people need care and support far more than the others.

Children are our priority in this case. Since schools are closed, they need to refresh their mind with some academic works.

In this regard, preparations have been finalized to support them online via Telegram and other means.

The other person whom The Ethiopian Herald approaches is a volunteer who needs to be kept anonymous. He said:

“Following the first case of corona virus confirmation in Ethiopia, my family and I are doing our best to help the needy in our neighborhoods. This supports are both in cash and in kind.”

He said, our support should be coordinated and sustainable. He also suggested that people should grant supports from their hearts, not just for mere media consumption.
