ADDIS ABABA – Member states of Regional Association of Energy Regulators in Eastern and Southern Africa are holding their 9th annual general meeting to exploring ways of boosting energy production in the regions.
Representatives of Ethiopia, Burundi, Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan Uganda, Zambia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia and Tunisia are taking part in the meeting.
During the opening of the meeting, Frehiwot Woldehana, State Minister of Ethiopian Water Irrigation and Energy remarked that regional integration should be taken as must do approach to increase the number and impact of power projects.
To him, the Ethiopian government is so committed to transport and utilize energy efficiently and has been integrating the region with energy. This in turn will enhance regional cooperation, he added.
Amb. Dr. Kipyego Cheluget, Assistant Secretary General of COMESA in charge of programs on his part also noted that eastern and southern regions of Africa need more cooperation. To him, COMESA is also working on the way of facilitating energy trade and development despite of some hurdles.
The ongoing regional infrastructural projects will also enhance energy sector players to invest in these countries of the association. As to him, the heads of COMESA state members are also showing their keen interest on developing more infrastructures with COMESA. He calls for collaboration among organizations, private sectors, academia to invest their roles to ease energy scarcity.
