• Indian doctors conduct critical, advanced endoscopic surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital
ADDIS ABABA – India’s cooperation in the health sector with Ethiopia includes support for training and capacity building, supply of equipment and medicines, telemedicine facilities and continuing medical education for health care professionals as well as facilitation for treatment at tertiary care facilities in India, according to Ambassador of India to Ethiopia.
Indian doctors from Lokmanya Hospital are conducting some highly critical and advanced endoscopic surgeries here at the St. Paul’s Hospital from 9-15th February 2020, supported by the Rotary Club of Pune.
Ambassador of India to Ethiopia and the African Union, Anurag Srivastava visited the Endoscopic Surgery Camp yesterday and met with the doctors, members of Rotary Club, Pune and the team from St. Paul’s hospital which is providing much needed local support.
Ambassador Anurag said India and Ethiopia have strong and robust cooperation in the health sector. The Camp involves in the transfer of learning and training to enhance local expertise, he highlighted.
Under the ‘India for Humanity’ initiative, an artificial limb fitment camp was organized by the Government of India in the same hospital where 538 persons with disability were provided with prosthetics in the month of November-December 2019, thereby regaining their mobility, dignity, and sustenance, the Ambassador explained.
“Furthering the bilateral relations in health sectors, a donation of USD 2 million of medicines was made recently in fulfillment of announcements made during the State Visit of Indian President Shri Ram Nath Kovind to Ethiopia in October 2017.”
As part of Ethiopia’s development partnership, India has donated a 64-Slice CT Scan machine to Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa and provides fully-paid training opportunities to hundreds of Ethiopian doctors, paramedics and other health care professionals.
Under the framework of India Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) III held in New Delhi in October 2015, grant assistance of USD 600 million are being implemented with partner countries in Africa, including Ethiopia that includes an India-Africa Development Fund of USD 100 million and an India-Africa Health Fund of USD 10 million.
As to Ambassador Anurag, a number of initiatives and programmes have been put in place to re-affirm their mutual desire and strengthen bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in political, economic, commercial, scientific, cultural and educational spheres.
