ADDIS ABABA – “Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has been carrying out quite a lot of effective works intending to restructure the inside out of the commission and achieve its desired goal down the road,” said Dr. Daniel Bekele EHRC’s Commissioner in an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald.
As the Commission had not been independent over the last years, the Commission was not able to achieve its intended targets. It also failed to carry out its duties and responsibilities to the expected level, he added.
“With the purpose of addressing the existing problems, we have been placing emphasis on reorganizing the commission and revising the legal frameworks of the Commission.”
“Likewise, targeting at improving the capacity and limitation of the institution, we have carried out an assessment,” he continued.
He stressed that the amendment of the proclamation has been done based on international principles known by the United Nations in which human rights institutions of all countries are governed.
Members of the Parliament have urged the Commission to work hand-in-glove with stakeholders and reap the fruit of success.
