547 telecom vandalism, theft result loss valued at 100 mln. Birr

ADDIS ABABA– Ethio telecom revealed that 547 vandalism, worth 100 million Birr, occurred on its infrastructure over the last six months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year.

Speaking at a Telecom Infrastructure Security Forum held yesterday, Ethio telecom Chief Executive Officer Frehiwot Tamiru said that the telecom’s studies indicated the involvement of organized groups in the infrastructural theft, affecting both the national economy and service quality.

Copper cable theft is the major target of the culprits, she said, pointing out that, “Communities’ low-level awareness regarding the protection of the telecom infrastructure and inadequate legal measures taken on the wrongdoers has been exacerbating the problem.”

She further called upon all the concerned parties to discharge their responsibilities in protecting these highly valuable infrastructures.

Members of the House of Peoples Representatives and the House of Federation, senior government officials, journalists and other stakeholders took part in the Forum aimed at creating awareness towards telecom infrastructure damages.
