Oromia celebrating UNESCO’s Geda inscription

YABELO – Oromia Culture and Tourism Bureau has begun to celebrate a two-day long commemoration of the 3rd year since the inscription of Geda System in the UNESCO’s intangible heritage list.

Marking the occasion yesterday, Bureau Head Girma Hailu said that the anniversary is intended to recall the significance of the inscription of the long lived system in terms of promotion and preservation.

As to him, Geda is a symbol of democracy and rule of law whereby its community transfers power peacefully to the next successor. It is a culture of tolerance and behavioral improvement; he said adding that the inscription will help to conserve it for long far from pollution.

Since the 16th century, the Oromo people have been transferring power peacefully while the world is suffering from absence of rule of law. The system has become a world heritage therefore all Ethiopian’s and the world have responsibility to conserve it, he noted.

According to him, the bureau is working to conserve and register additional heritages in UNESCO list, including Bale Mountains, irreechaa, Sof Omar cave and so on.

The two day long anniversary of the inscription of the Geda System kicked off yesterday with various programs and exhibition that witnessed cultural costumes, traditional instruments and coffee ceremony.
