Ministry endeavors to improve effectiveness of higher education

ADDIS ABABA – Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MoSHE) announced that the ministry is endeavoring ardently to bring effectiveness and efficiency of public universities, through making them a center of excellence.

In her opening remark on the sectorial reform council discussion that kicked of yesterday, Minister Prof. Hirut Woldemariam said that education sectors and stakeholders should play a pivotal role in generating scientific solution for the country.

As a result, she stated that roadmap preparation, research, 10-year sector’s development plan and guidelines are being conducted by the ministry, for better achievement with depth discussion. Moreover, she revealed that women empowerment is one of the basic issues made by the ministry. Currently, there are 26 women vice presidents in different universities, delivering national and international leadership trainings.

 Presenting his paper on “differentiating the Ethiopian Higher Education system,” Tesfaye Muhiye (Ph.D) Strategic Center Deputy Director under the Ministry stated that differentiating Ethiopian university is one of the solutions for conveying universities’ effectiveness and efficiency.

Based on criteria like research performance, social equity, research culture and others, the ministry has categorized the universities in four groups. Accordingly, 21 universities have been categorized as comprehensive, the remaining 8, 15 and 3 universities were categorized as research, applied and specialized levels respectively, Tesfaye noted.

Briefing journalists, Prof. Hirut remarked that the new differentiating system also includes students’ placement and university lecturers’ allocation system. She further affirmed that this system would start its operation by the coming Ethiopian new academic year, adding that differentiating universities is paramount important for economic growth, apart from students’ satisfaction.

 Public and private higher education sectors managements, member of parliaments, and other stakeholders are participating in the discussion which will be finalized today. The new education roadmap, peace and different guidelines are among the issues which have been discussed.
