PM Abiy appears as FT’s only African game-changing politician

ADDIS ABABA – The Financial Times (FT) newspaper picked Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed under ‘game-changing politicians’ list.

The premier is the only African leader included in the list alongside 50 people who shaped the last decade. U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and former U.S. president Barack Obama are also in the list.

A panel of FT reporters picked the 50 individuals from across politics, economics, business and technology and culture, media, science and sport spectra.

“Abiy has been in the news arena very prominently since April 2018. It took only months for him to be branded a reformist Prime Minister […] in Ethiopia,” said FT explaining the contribution of the premier.

Ethio-Eritrea peace rapprochement as well as the mass release of political figures and the opening up of political and democratic spaces are among some of his successes stories.

FT mentioned the concern of the Nobel Committee regarding the peace process with Eritrea while quoting Dr. Abiy as saying, “The deal was irreversible referring to it as “iron-clad” and to Eritrean president Isaias Afwerki as a ‘comrade-in-peace’”

On Wednesday, President Isaias Afwerki arrived in Addis on a two-day state visit aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations of the two countries, The Ethiopian Herald reported Thursday.
