ETRSS-1 image test analysis continues

. Ethiopia sets to develop 10 satellites at home in 15 years

ADDIS ABABA – Test analysis continued on images accessed from the Ethiopian Remote Sensing Satellite (ETRSS-1), disclosed Entoto Observatory and Research Center.

Briefing journalists Tuesday, Yilkal Chane, Center’s Satellite Development and Operation Director said the mission data will be accessed after the wellbeing and its full functionality is confirmed.

The entire evaluation needs at least a week, he said, adding that when the whole process is over and done with, the Center will get itself fully engaged in the mission work. “We are getting information four times a day and the satellite is properly operating. We are receiving information that demonstrates its current status.”

“Likewise, there is in-orbit acceptance. The body that has tested and launched the satellite would handover to us confirming its wellbeing. After that, the whole thing will be monitored at the Center,” he added.

In related news, a minimum of ten satellites will be developed at home over the next fifteen years, Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) Director-General, Dr. Solomon Belay said. In the short term, the Institute will attach significance to make communication satellite, high-resolution remote sensing satellite, assembly integration testing center and other related aspects, according to him.

Optical astronomical observatory, widening international collaboration and carrying out radio astronomy building are kept as a long term endeavor, the director indicated. The institute has been working hard to take the space sector to a new height of success, he said.

“As space science is a zero error sector, the institute was able to pass through many ups and downs to reach where it is in the present day.” As per the director, Ethiopia is one of the six countries onboard the space program, he said, adding South Africa and Egypt have launched quite a lot of satellites in Africa.
