Sheger Riverside Project to replant indigenous trees

ADDIS ABABA – The Sheger Riverside Project is set to replant about 1,800 scientifically preserved indigenous trees on the project areas.

Wondiye Kebede, a botanist who works at the Chinese funded Sheger Project said that around 1,800 trees have been collected and preserved scientifically and will be replanted in the first phase of the project.

While there has been an ambition to transplant 3,800 trees on the first phase of the project, he said oldest olive, Juniper, acacia and palm trees will be cleared due to the construction of roads. Various buildings are also relocated and preserved to be planted on the riverside.

Another botanist, Kaleb Minwuyelet on his part told the Amharic Daily Addis Zemen that though transplanting of trees is a new thing in Ethiopia, the process has so far been successful.

Indicating that two months have gone since the launch of the Chinese aided project, Kaleb said the tree and flower plantation will be held as of next month in a way that reflects the culture of Ethiopians.

In order to provide care for the relocated trees, the project has deployed more than 300 daily laborers and 35 botanists. Apart from transplanting trees, the project has been striving to pollinate various flower spies. Within two months of performance alone, hundreds of thousands of flowers have been adopted, he added.

Keeping its promise to develop 12 Kilometer rehabilitation Sheger Riverside, China has officially launched parts of the project in front of Sheraton Addis Hotel in September in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. It is also said that indigenous and new plant specious are expected to be planted in the park, which has already culminated the land preparation.
