Federal Technical and Vocational Educational Training Agency announced that it is working to enhance the participation of private institutions in the sector to build up learners’ knowledge, skills and competencies thereby facilitate socio-economic development.
Abdi-Wasa Abdulahi Technical and Vocational Sector State Minister with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education said that Ethiopia has to devise an efficient and effective technical and vocational education training system to address the skills requirements and qualifications demanded for the job market, win employers’ expectations and eventually succeed in its socio-economic transformation.
To this end, both the private and public sectors have a role to play in improving the delivery of high quality vocational educational and trainings. He noted that the Ministry has set an Education Development Roadmap to improve the education quality of the sector through increasing accessibility and ensuring equity.
As to him unlike the previous education curriculum the Roadmap enables students to develop their skills beyond obtaining knowledge. Saying that some private institutions are for-profit colleges and exist to make merely money, he urged to discharge social responsibility accordingly.
“In the current competitive global set up, TVET is key for the socio- economic transformation of developing countries like Ethiopia. So, our country needs strong TVET system to ensure that the economy has workforces with the required skill level and quantity.
He indicated that though the system is helpful to improve the sector, because of lack of stakeholder ownership and other factors, the implementation has not yet yielded the expected results. It is learned that currently there are more than 1700 Technical and Vocational schools in the country including private holding schools.
