President Sahle-Work calls for actions at Global Gender Summit

ADDIS ABABA (FBC) – At the Global Gender Summit organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, President Sahle-Work Zewde called for actions to accelerate progress on gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa and around.

In her remark, President Sahle-Work said that it is time to move from rhetoric to actions.

 She further said: “There is a door of opportunity in Ethiopia that has been opened. The onus is on us to sustain this great progress that has been registered in Ethiopia in just a year and a half.

“What has happened in Ethiopia is a miracle of what political will can lead you to. And the work has just started.

There is no Africa we want if young women are not a part of it. Believe in what you can do.”

 President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina said “No bird flies with one wing. Let us support women to thrive; and our businesses, our countries and our communities will thrive.”

Rwandan President Paul Kagame for his part noted that change of mindset is what is required to ensure gender equality. Narrowing gender gap is everyone’s responsibility”

The biennial event brought together leaders from government, development institutions, private sector, civil society and academia.

Rwanda is the first African country to host the Summit being held with the theme “unpacking constraints to gender equality.”

The main objective of the summit is to share best practices and catalyze investment to accelerate progress on gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa and around the world.

It was learnt that Rwanda was the first African country to host the biennial Summit.

The Summit will conclude today.
